Barnstaple Guildhall

Enter through the gated archway in Butchers Row and discover the wealth of treasures inside this historic building, centre to Barnstaple's history over the last two centuries. The main Chamber, previously the Town's Court Room. Recently restored portraits of Councillors from days gone by cover the walls, while above the main bench are portraits of Barnstaple's great benefactor William Rock, and the Barnstaple born poet and playwright John Gay. Next door the Dodderidge Room contains the Town Plate, and among the treasures on show here are the Mayor's ceremonial chain, together with the chains of the Master Butchers and Bakers of Barnstaple.
The collection of paintings at the Guildhall can now be viewed online at the "Your Paintings" website.
Your Paintings is a joint initiative between the BBC, the Public Catalogue Foundation (a registered charity) and participating collections and museums from across the UK.
